American Acne and Rosacea Society
The AARS statement for a non profit status says that the organization's primary exempt purpose is "to promote, support, and develop and provide a forum for the exchange of information about acne and rosacea; to promote research in acne and rosacea; to improve the care of patients with acne or rosacea."
AARS received in donations and grants $325,615. The total expenses for 2008 were $162,255. It appears that most of the donations come from pharmaceutical companies. At the beginning of 2008 the AARS had on hand $99,536 leaving at the end of 2008 a balance in the bank of $262,791. What did the AARS do with the $162K it spent? Here is the breakdown:
Grants $30K
Professional Fees - $29K
PPP&S - $1K
Other Expenses - $101K
Total - $161K
The $30K in research grants were given in $10K increments to three physicians:
Whitney Bowe, MD
Thy Thy Do, MD
Lisa Mair, MD
That means that for the $325K it received in donations $30K was spent on research. That means for every dollar donated to the AARS 9 cents was spent on research.
The president of the AARS is Hilary E. Baldwin, MD and James Q. Del Rosso, MD serves as 'Pres-Elect.' There are eleven other medical doctors including Richard Gallo, MD who serve as directors. Cynthia Froehlich serves as the executive director . Click here for a photo of the 2006 board.
