Gabriella Getzko's Natural Treatment for Rosacea

Gabriella Getzko's Natural Treatment for rosacea was posted in June 2009 in response to a NY Times Consults Experts on the Frontlines of Medicine Q&A which has been reproduced below:

"Thank you for bringing up such a complicated skin issue that I recently found a miracle treatment for, right in my bathroom cabinet already! Baking soda & hydrogen peroxide. Bingo! Please read and learn how it may help you, too!

I turned 35, June 5 2009, and having suffered with horrible, everything resistant and every type/ form of Rosacea except for Rhinophymar, for about 3 horrible years, after a lifetime of naturally wonderful, radiant, non break-out skin. .

I have it all: RSD- and other auto immune disorders, broken blood vessels, the papulopustular type and “high color”. I used to find things that seemed to work for a while then stopped working as most of you have, too. I also have seborreah dermatitis which is helped by steroid creams, which didn’t help the early onset of my Rosacea, along with a change in my hormones when I began to go through early menopause caused by my illness and it’s treatment. Luckily, my hormones have balanced out but, my skin forever changed. Or so I thought!

And, since I “have it all”, I “have taken it all”: antibiotics *namely a fairly high and regular dose of doxycycleine, topical pharmaceutical gels and creams, to over the counter remedies from a WIDE variety of cosmetic and naturopathic topical treatments, to detoxification and skin renewal teas to strengthen my internal body’s defense towards it. Sleep worked the best, ultimately. But, I did EVERYTHING from Naturopathic to Homeopathic and Eastern to Western medicine and all the way back again! Ultimately, a lot of sleep and a lot of primer and foundation along with eye make-up to “change the focus”- was my true salvation.

Living in sunny LA, was a nightmare when I was using pharmaceutical grade medicines. I slathered on zinc based sun blocks, tried all types of “Redness Reducing”, “Calming”, “Rosacea Skin Care Lines and Treatments”. I had to wear hats every time I knew I’d be outside for more than 10 mins, and did everything to help protect my skin as well, not only because of the “hot effect” but especially because of the side effects and strict warnings that go with the pharmaceutical treatments.

I have tried multiple forms of through laster therapies in the beginning, from pulse light to copper bromide. YEP, I have DONE it all. I thought I finally found the best thing on the market for me and for the time being: Dr. Wiel’s Plantidote by Origins skin lotion & serum, along with Jason’s Natural Vitamin K lotion, along with Gunthey/Renkar’s Ice Sun Block with Origin’s World Defense Primer, then mineral foundation to cover up the remaining “pimples” redness. Not exactly simple, and I add more on some days. Washing my face always seem to trigger it more, too. So, I know what a nightmare Rosacea can be, how time consuming, painful and down right embarrassing.

And after all that I did, I still suffered from break outs, red flashes and burning sensations regularly. I could get my beauty rest, find the treatment that was working for that time period and then hit a wall of stress & within minutes feel my face on fire. And my frustration would literally add fuel to the “fire.”

Then, I found IT! The most inexpensive, accessible “cure” to the most hard to combat Rosacea and HIGHLY sensitive skin. It was on a natural website for regaining the body’s PH levels, a “natural alkalizing” website. At first, I was skeptical- I had heard it ALL and then some! I am sure you can relate to that. And it was all conflicting information, or it was temporary relief till I found the “next best” treatment.

And, if you have it as bad as I do/did- you know, even at it’s best, it never really “goes away”, not for long at best. I say, till now and speak of it in the past tense. I feel like an alcoholic in recovery. One day at a time… even though I can and DO go for weeks between treating myself with my mixture of hydrogen peroxide & baking soda, I know this will likely be something I use for the rest of my life but the length between treatments has decreased over time. Maybe there is hope yet? Maybe there is a cure, a way to get the skin back to it’s healthy state? Maybe not. I do know, this is as close to a cure there is out there.


The the papulopustular type which is thought by most dermatologists to POSSIBLY be a result of a dogmite *or something like that- ICK, and this mixture supposedly depletes the oxygen to the mites, killing them off. That is why they say it is important to make sure all pillows and linen are cleaned or replaced. The rest tends to be related to genetics, hormonal changes, auto-immune disorders, stress and other things that go under “the we don’t really know” facet of modern medicine. I am not a doctor and I am not really sure of why this mix works for EVERY form of Rosacea, except the Rhinophymar *and it may cure that, too but I don’t have it so I can’t say. I do have every other form and “cause”- so I CAN give my personal thumbs up for everything else!

The remedy has renewed my skin to it’s amazingly youthful, dewy and break out free state and I hope you get a chance to try it! I want to shout out loud, my answer for Rosacea, to everyone who has this. I want to yell it, and help everyone who has or is about to spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars on treatments, wreak havoc on our bodies and increase one’s suseptibility to sun damage, etc. It’s simply a blend of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide!! SIMPLE AS THAT!! YAY!

I heard that some people started with too much baking soda and it “burned” their sensitive skin (as I am sure you can relate to the sensitivity that goes with Rosacea), so be gentle with the amount as you begin and play around with the mixture till you find what works best for you.

I simply mixed the baking soda & hydrogen peroxide in a small bowl and took toilet paper and dabbed it all over, rubbed it in like a mask and gentle took a cool wet washcloth and removed the pasty “mask” rinsing the washcloth and removing it more and more. Now, I use cotton balls. At first, as the washcloth removed the “paste” on my face, I could see exactly where my Rosacea was. It was like a special light went over my face, revealing the “blueprints” to my Rosacea. It may seem more inflamed but it feels better instantly, especially if you start with a small amounts of baking soda. But, I found that it quickly disappears to beautiful, naturally healthy looking skin.

I did that 2x a day for about 5 days. But, by day 2, poof! It was ALL gone and never to return. I used aloe vera 99% natural and organic, along with some other soothing products I love shortly after removing the mixture. I am sure you have your favorite soothing and hydrating products, too! Now, if I get any tingling or see any sign of it returning, I go back to the 2x a day mix for a couple of days and so far have not had ANY problems, no major break outs, no need to wear make up again- unless I WANT to!

It is also recommend when beginning this, to clean your bed linen, wash your pillows, etc. As the mites can live there, waiting to re-breed on your face. Now, I know, the dogmamites are not a “medical fact” for everyone. But, I do know, what is true is that baking soda and hydrogen peroxide with a cotton ball on the face 2x a day has restored my skin to it’s “dewy state”. My skin is more radiant than ever, which is a major boost to my energy and self confidence.

Also, a bonus, is hydrogen peroxide on a cotton ball, alone, is that it has diminished a HUGE BROWN spot/blotch on my forehead, which appeared gigantic in size and dramatic in color earlier this year. But, it has reduced the color dramatically and continues to go down every time I use the hydrogen peroxide on it.

As for internal remedies, the same website for alkazing the body I found this recipe on has a remedy to drink, which includes borax. That scares me, personally, though people swear by it. Also, it said some people drink baking soda and lemons mixed with water instead to help the intestinal attributes of Rosacea but I find the topical remedy is all I need!

Remember, I had the type of Rosacea triggered by ANYTHING. When I was stressed out, you could literally watch my face break out in a major way under 5mins. I found it embarrassing and became so self conscious. Now, I am literally smiling from ear to ear, not just FEEL but KNOW I really do look 10yrs younger EASILY, and NATURALLY! Naturally, that is the best way to go and the best way to feel! It’s also cheaper than everything else I put on my face by far!

I use baking soda for stains on my clothes, stains around the house. My boyfriend used to joke that I was a baking soda nut, now, it is OFFICIAL. It makes sense in so many ways but, to try it yourself and to see, is to believe!

Good luck! I hope you read this and find it helps you! Remember, start with a low amount of baking soda till you find the right amount that works for you! Baking Soda and Hydrogen Peroxide, dabbed off with a cool wet wash cloth- VOILA! Enjoy this inexpensive remedy you may also be able to try immediately!

I saw some woman charging $28 for this information online. What? Well, we all have to make a living, but for those of us who know how intolerable and how ineffective treatments are- well, this is priceless information.

Since this treatment is so inexpensive and easy to do I tried it for six successive nights. I applied a small amount of one quarter teaspoon of baking soda with less than a quarter teaspoon of H2O2 to my face every night and went to sleep. It goes on with a slightly milky texture and dries to a white paste. In the morning I would wash my face with a mild soap and then shave. The H2O2 stings a bit and it dried my skin. Those with sensitive skin should be forwarned. After six nights I applied Aloe Vera leaf directly on my skin for four successive nights and it appears that this treatment does indeed help. I have Aloe Vera plants growing right outside my home so I can cut a leaf and directly apply the gooey stuff right on my face. The real Aloe Vera. I recommend you try this treatment. You may get similar results that you will be happy with. However, after about a week to ten days of this it seemed to irritate my skin. I had to go back to my Rosacea Diet and ZZ cream which has been my routine that seems to work best for me.
